João Galego

In the heart of the northern part of the island of Boavista, Cape Verde, lies Joao Galego, a small rural village that, together with Fundo Das Figueiras and Cabeça Dos Tarafes, forms the northern region of the island. This region is famous for its “morabeza,” a local term that evokes kindness and affection, and for the warm-hearted people who inhabit it.

Joao Galego is a small place, but rich in culture and traditions. The main street, known as Rua D´reita, is a focal point of the village, where one can observe murals in honor of Amílcar Cabral at the local cultural center. The village square, with around 800 inhabitants, is a lively place where agriculture and livestock farming are the main activities.

The community of Joao Galego is deeply connected to the land, with a strong focus on agriculture. They not only provide for themselves but also supply the island with basic food products. At least three times a week, the residents go to the city of Sal Rei to sell their products at the market or advertise to their customers through their cars, announcing the arrival of the products for sale. Cheese is a particularly appreciated and marketed product by the people of the north.

The festival of São João Batista, held in June, is another distinctive feature of the João Galego locality. During this event, various cultural, sports, and recreational activities are promoted, making the village a vibrant place of festivities and traditions.

Visiting Joao Galego is an authentic and fascinating experience, an opportunity to immerse oneself in the rural life of Cape Verde and discover a community that lives in harmony with nature and its traditions. The simplicity and hospitality of the locals, together with the natural and cultural beauty of the village, make Joao Galego an unmissable destination for anyone wishing to explore the island of Boavista from a unique and genuine perspective.

EXCURSIONS THAT PASS HERE

HALF DAY MORRO NEGRO BY 4x4

4 hours

On the road to the history and tradition of Boavista, the first stop is the terracotta factory of Rabil, the ancient Olarìa, where skilled artisans work the red earth by hand and create very nice statues. Leaving Rabil we turn towards the Viana desert, formed with the sands that the winds bring from Africa: you can slide down from the dunes and walk to “hear” the magical silence of this place. The tour continue on a road still made of cobblestones, towards the villages of the North: João Galego, Fundo das Figueiras and Cabeça dos Tarafes, very colourful, full of flowers and hospitable people.

From Cabeça the path take a black run, crossing a surreal landscape of volcanic stones, which leads to one of the highest points of Boavista: the Morro Negro lighthouse. Then go for a 10 minutes walk, where the view on the Atlantic Ocean is breathtaking. On the way back the path is the same, but by changing the direction and view, the emotions are also renewed.
