Rehabilitation of Fort Duque de Bragança

The Fort Duque de Bragança, built 200 years ago, on the Sal-Rei islet, on Boa Vista Island, functioned as defense of that port against the then frequent attacks by pirates and privateers on Boa Vista Island.

In an order published by the Ministry of Maritime Economy, the Cape Verde Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC) is authorized to “initiate rehabilitation and conservation works” in that fort.

In particular, the IPC’s request for intervention consists of work on “consolidation of the fort’s walls, cleaning of the surroundings, rehabilitation of the cannons and construction of a wooden walkway”.

“Concluding these rehabilitation works, the IPC will make the fort into a museum with information and signage”, says the Ministry of Maritime Economy, which underlines the “positive impact” of this project.
