Morna week is coming in the island
The Morna is the musical genre that most identifies the Cape Verdean people. It is truly a national symbol, just as tango is for Argentina, rumba for Cuba, fado for Portugal, etc. Some musical genres of Cape Verde are more or less appreciated based on the age of the listener, the season, the country of origin, personal taste, but in Cape Verde Morna is the only genre that can be widely transversal in all age groups, chronologically and geographically.
From 21 to 28 September 2019 in Boa Vista the week of the Morna is celebrated, with a series of musical events that transmit the culture of this genre so much appreciated throughout the country. The following events are recommended for tourists visiting this week:
- 21 September, main square of Sal-Rei (Esplanada Silves) – 7.00 pm
- 25 September, Esplanada Kriola – 6.00 pm
- 27 and 28 September, two days of the Morna festival, in Praia Diante (the fishermen’s beach in Sal-Rei) – 7.00 pm
The Morna week is an important appointment for the island of Boa Vista, which celebrates tradition by inviting artists from every island, to sing and play the most characteristic songs of this timeless and sedimented musical genre in the Cape Verdean culture.
The Morna is also a candidate for world heritage (UNESCO). Here more information: Morna in Boa Vista.
