Kite Downwind on the Cape Verde Islands

A no-profit project like no other! The kite Downwind was created 4 years ago with the idea and motivation to raise funds for a kindergarten here on the island of Boa Vista. Each participant paid a “registration fee” for the participation and what was left at the end was 100% invested in the kindergarten, as it will be in the future.

For a participation fee of Euro 390€ the Downwinders get a terrific offer for 2019! Ulrich Frank, the founder of www.kite4change.com, personally looks after each participant in advance. Travel planning, accommodation, airport transfer and all downwind trips on the island are planned and organized with the best local kitesurfers.

This kite event on the Cape Verde Islands, which connects the two islands of Sal and Boa Vista with a spectacular downwinder, is entering its third round in February 2019.

Last year, the Cape Verdean kitesurfing legends Matchu Lopes and Mitu Monteiro, together with local talents and many Europeans, had a lot of fun with up to 30 knots of wind and massive waves. For safety reasons, the race only starts shortly before reaching Boa Vista; last year Matchu won the title, followed by Sean Guy and Arsenio Dias. The whole downwind event ended in a huge beach party, with live music, campfires; it felt like all the island’s inhabitants joined in too.

Now it’s time again, from the 13th to the 20th of February 2019, the biggest kite event of BoaVista takes place.

Up to 50 kitesurfers and surfers will compete for a packed and intense week, enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime experience of Downwind Trips with local surf culture and the Mega Downwinder of over 75km from Sal to Boa Vista, located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

A number of large boats with trained crews will be exclusively concerned with the safety of the participants. A professional film crew will capture the unbelievable atmosphere both on the water and on the beach.

Ulrich Frank, nicknamed Uli, has always been asked in the past, ‘why are you so committed to this kite downwinder on the Cape Verde Islands?’. His answer has always been: “For me, this is not business! It’s about sharing our passion for kitesurfing, experiencing the Cape Verdean culture, bringing benefits to good causes, and being true to our motto: A true adventure. It’s about experiencing a kite vacation like no other on this Kitesurfing Planet and experiencing and enjoying the motto here on the island: No Stress!”

Interested kite surfers can register for this top event with just a few clicks on the website www.kite4change.com and / or support the project.
