Insel Djeu


Ilhéu de Sal Rei ist eine unbewohnte Insel nahe der Küste von Boa Vista. Sie liegt 1 km (0,6 Meilen) westlich der Inselhauptstadt Sal Rei. Seine Fläche beträgt 89 ha (0,34 Quadratmeilen) und sein höchster Punkt ist 27 m (88,6 ft).

Die Insel hat freigelegte Basalt- und Kalksteinfelsen und in geschützten Bereichen gibt es Sandstrände. Die gesamte Insel ist ein Naturdenkmal. Die Landzunge Ponta de Espuma ist der westlichste Punkt der Insel. Eine schmale Meerenge im Nordosten trennt sie 500 bis 600 Meter von der Insel Boa Vista. An der Südspitze der Insel liegt die Ruine des portugiesischen Forts Duque de Bragança.

Die Insel hat einen Leuchtturm namens Ponta Espuma, der 1888 erbaut wurde und aus einer 5 Meter hohen Betontreppe mit dem Licht an der Spitze bestand. Das aktuelle Licht ist ein zylindrischer Metallmast mit einer Höhe von 7,9 Metern (26 Fuß) mit Balkon und Laterne. Das Licht ist immer noch aktiv, hat eine Solarenergieeinheit und gibt je nach Richtung in einem Zeitraum von zwanzig Sekunden fünf weiße oder rote Blitze ab, die bis zu 11 Seemeilen sichtbar sind.


– Die empfohlenen Wege, um zur Insel Djeu zu gelangen, sind die kleinen Fischerboote oder eine größere Bootsfahrt.
– Wenn Sie zum ersten Mal gehen, raten wir Ihnen, nicht alleine dorthin zu gehen: Auf dieser Seite sind die offiziellen Ausflüge aufgeführt. Hüten Sie sich davor, mit Personen dorthin zu gehen, die keine reguläre Lizenz oder Versicherung haben.
– Obwohl die Entfernung zur Küste kurz ist, versuchen Sie nicht zu schwimmen: Auch ohne Wellen ist die Meereskraft sehr stark.
– Die Reflexion der Sonne im Sand ist wie im Schnee: Bringen Sie Sonnenbrille, Sonnencreme und einen Hut mit; Im Winter weht viel Wind, aber es lohnt sich, diesen Strand mindestens einmal zu besuchen, Sie werden es nicht bereuen (es ist atemberaubend).

From your hotel or apartment get in our transport to the port of Sal Rei. There, a small boat will wait, so you can board on the authentic Ketch vessel. Once onboard you will discover the history of a luxury expedition ship, the Cape Verdean and foreign crew will host the sails and put our cap on Djeu island. The little island is famous for is white sand beach with calm sea and a beautiful view of Sal Rei. While sailing, you can just relax and listen to the sound of the waves. Comfort and intimacy is granted, with 16 guests maximum.

Lunch will be served onboard, with bruschetta, cocktail of fresh fruits, salad, grilled fish and local vegetables, wine, draft beer and juices. After the lunch, our crew will guide you with the dinghy to the snorkeling spot. Discover the maritime fauna of Cape Verde, one of the most diverse in the world. Reaching the island of Djeu, dry a bit, and come learn something about the history of Boa Vista while admiring the point of view of the fort of the Duke of Bragança. A Khaïma tent will wait for you to enjoy a tea (served Senegalese way) with a group of Kora/Balafon playing. Then, time to come back!

DEPARTURE: every Thursday at 8.30 AM. The guide will contact you for the meeting time from your accommodation.

RETURN: expected after about 6 hours of navigation (full day). Transport will take you back to the hotel around 5:30 pm.

The departure is scheduled from the beach of Sal-Rei, where you get on the RIB, an ocean-going boat. The tour heads for the dunes of Morro de Areia, and then stop for some time to relax in the sun and bathe in the waters of the bay. If the sea allows it, you can also circumnavigate the islet, from where you can admire the biodiversity of the island.

Next, the tour goes to the wonderful beach of the island of Djeu, a quiet beach, where you can play or swim in total relaxation while snorkeling, where you can admire the diversity of marine species.

A few steps from the beach, there is the old fort of the Duke of Bragança, a historical find that can be visited on foot where you can still see the cannons that were used to defend Boavista from pirate attacks. The excursion is ideal for children over 4 years old.

The guide brings you from your accommodation to the port. On the first stop, you can fish – everyone can participate – whether professional or beginner. Together you catch the fish for lunch (please note that it is bottom fishing). You will be amazed how many different fish we bring out of the sea.

Afterwards, the cruise goes through the beautiful bay of Chaves. The boat reaches the small island „Ilheu de Sal Rei“ („Djeu“) and here there is enough time to snorkel or swim. There is snorkelling equipment on board for you like „Easybreath“ full face masks, that offer the highest level of comfort and hygiene because there is no mouthpiece.

Then you cross over to the small island with a rubber dinghy. While you explore the old fort, the sailor prepares the food, grilling the fish you’ve caught before, with fresh homemade salad, rice and fresh bread. Drinks are included. On request, is possible to have meat (please let us know when booking).
