Cape Verde is the third largest reserve in the world by number of Caretta Caretta turtles after a hosted Oman and one of Florida.

Guided visits to observe the nesting of turtles take place every night from June to mid-October. August is peak month of spawning season.

The observation of turtles contributes to the survival of these ancient creatures, showing the inhabitants of the archipelago that a living tortoise is worth more than one dead. In fact they were once hunted and sold to the market for their bones and their flesh. Tortoise eggs are still, unfortunately, a dish that is consumed illegally in some areas of the archipelago.

Often the turtles that hit the coast do not nest because they can not find a suitable place on the beach. Sometimes just a noise, a very difficult type of sand or boring light is enough to make them retreat. However, the opportunity to see at least one turtle during the summer season is guaranteed to 100%.

Why watch the turtles?

A turtle lives 100 years on average. After birth, it remains at sea 20 years and then returns to the place where it was born to the nest. No GPS. In the dark. It is a miracle that should not be lost.
